Igbo Readings for Burial Mass

Christian Burial ceremonies
VIGIL MASS

ENTRANCE HYMN
O paradise! O paradise!
Who doth not crave for rest:
Who would not seek the happy land,
Where those who love are blest?

COLLECT
O God, to whom it belongs to have mercy and to spare. We humbly entreat you for the soul of your servant, . . . whom you have summoned from this world, that you would not deliver him into the hands of the enemy; do not forget him forever, but bid your holy angels to receive him and bear him to your home in Paradise. Since he has placed his hope in you, may he not know the pains of hell, but bring him eternal happiness in heaven, through Christ our Lord, Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading: A reading from the Prophet, Daniel (12:1-3)
I Daniel, was doing penance when I received this message from the Lord. “At the time, Michael will stand up, the great prince who mounts guard over your people. There is going to be a time of great distress, unparalleled since nations first came into existence. When that time comes, your people will be spared, all those whose names are found written in the Book, of those who lie sleeping in the dust of the earth, many will awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace. The learned will shine as brightly as the vault of heaven and those who have instructed many in virtue, as bright as stars for all eternity.”

This is the Word of the Lord.

REPONSORIAL PSALM (PSALM 23)
Response: I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

1. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters, He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name Sake. (Resp.)

2. Even though I walk through the valley
of shadow of death, I fear no evil, for
thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff
they comfort me. (Resp.)

3. Thou prepares a table before me in
the presence of my enemies: Thou
anointed my head with oil, my cup
overflows. (Resp.)

4. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell forever and ever.(Resp.)

Second reading: A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans (Rom. 14:7-12)
None of us lives for himself only, none of us dies for himself only. If we live, it is for the Lord that we live, and if we die, it is for the Lord that we die. So whether we live or die we belong to the Lord. For Christ died and rose to life in order to be the Lord of the living and the dead. This is also why you should never pass judgment on a brother or contempt him. As surely as I am the living God, says the Lord, everyone will confess that I am God. Everyone of us, then, will have to give account of himself to God.

This is the Word of God.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL
A reading from the Holy Gospel According to John (12:23-28)
Jesus said to his disciples: “Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you, most solemnly, unless a wheat of grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life looses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If a man serves me, he must follow me, wherever I am, my servant will be there too. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him.

Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. A voice came from heaven, “ I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again”.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Priest: In the name of the Father . . . .

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Mercies and God of all comforts, who comforts us all in our afflictions and thus enables us to comfort those in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from him. (2 Cor. 1:3-4)

All: Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Priest: I bless the body of . . . with the Holy Water that recalls the baptism of which St. Paul writes: “All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death.” By baptism into his death, we were buried together with him, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with him by likeness of his death, so shall we be united with him by likeness to his resurrection.

LET US PRAY:
Lord, we humbly ask your mercy. Accept the soul of your servant .. . . Forgive the sins he committed through human frailty. Free him from the bonds of death and admit him into everlasting life.

BURIAL/FUNERAL MASS

ENTRANCE HYMN
Just as Jesus died and rose again, so God will raise up with Him those who have died in Christ. As we all died in Adam, we shall live again in Christ. Alleluia.

OPENING PRAYER:
Almighty God, our Father, we firmly believe that Your Son died and rose to life. We pray for . . . who died in Christ. Raise him on the last day to share the glory of the risen Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING
A reading from the book of Wisdom (Wisd. 3:1-9).

But the souls of the upright are in the hands of God, and no torment can touch them. To the unlightened, they appear to die, their departure were regarded as a disaster, their living us like annihilation; but they are at peace. If, as it seemed to us, they suffered punishment, their hope was rich in immortality; slight was their correction, great will their blessings be. God was putting them to the test and has proved them worthy to be with him; he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a perfect burnt offering. At their time of visitation, they will shine out, as sparks run through the stubble, so will they. They will judge nations, rule over peoples, and the Lord will be their king for ever. Those who trust in him will understand the truth, those who are faithful will live with him in love; for grace and mercy await his holy ones, and he intervanes on behalf of his chosen.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.

3. They are happy who dwell in your house forever siging your praise. They are happy, whose strength is in you, in whose hearts are the roads to Zion. (Resp.)

4. One day within your court is better than a thousand elsewhere. The threshold of the house of God I prefer to the dwelling of the wicked. (Resp.)

SECOND READING:
A reading from the book of apocalypse (14:13).

GOSPEL
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matt.20: 1-16)

‘Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard. Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place and said to them, “You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage”. So they went. At about the sixth hour and about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same. Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said to them, “Why have you been standing idle all day?” “Because no one has hired us, they answered. He said to them, “You go into my vineyard too”. In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, “Call the workers and pay them thier wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first”. So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.

When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too recieved one denarius each. They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying, “The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day’s work in all the heat”. He answered one of them and said, My friend, I am not being unjust to you: did we not agree on one denarius? Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you. Have I no

BLESSING OF THE GRAVE
Lord Jesus Christ, by the three days you laid in the tomb, you made holy + the graves of all who believe in you, and even though their bodies lie in the earth, they trust that they, like you will rise again, give our father (mother) . . . peaceful rest in this grave until that day when you, the Resurrection and the life will raise him up in glory. Then may he see the light of your presence, Lord Jesus in the kingdom where you live for ever and ever. Amen.

He sprinkles the grave with Holy Water, incenses it. While the body is being placed in the grave, the priest says:

Since Almighty God has called our brother . . . from this life to Himself, we commit his body to the earth from which it was made. Christ was the first to rise from the dead, and we know that He will raise our mortal bodies to be like His in glory. We commend our brother to the Lord; May the Lord receive him into His peace and raise his body on the last day.
