Ufuma Community Holds 2016 Egwu Otute Uvume Festival

The people of Ufuma Community in Orumba North Local Government of Anambra State, August 13, 2016, celebrated this year's Egwu Otute Uvume Festival where they resolved to bury their differences.
This air of uncertainties, disaffection and polarization which exited before in the community, was captured in the addresses of their president-general, Sir Basil Onwunze, and the chairman of the Egwu Otute Planning Committee, Nze Nestor Nnaemeka Okoro, a former council chairman of Orumba North.
The traditional ruler of the community, HRH Igwe S. Chika Uchime, said the festival lasted for 32 days and marked their yearly New Yam Festival.
Igwe Uchime, in his address of welcome, explained that Otute Uvume was an annual festival in which Ufuma people celebrated the new yam with elaborate custom and tradition. This, according to him, was done in the footsteps of their noble ancestor who, he said, discovered the edible nature of yam when roasted.
'Otute is a shortened form for ''Otuto Chukwu kere Ihejioku'' which started when Ufuma ancestors began to thank God yearly for giving their progenitor the gift of discovering that yam subjected to roasting or cooking was edible,' he said.
He clarified that Ufuma had no idol attached to yam and its festivities, noting that the name, Ihejioku, was the title given to their progenitor when he discovered the edible nature of roast yam.
'When he developed interest and domesticated the wild plant by cultivating it in his farm and later started specifying the season for planting, harvesting and eating new yam, he was given the title, Diji,' he added.
The monarch, marking his second Egwu Otute on the throne, later blessed his subjects, asking God to open the gates of progress and prosperity for them in all their good endeavours.
The president-General of the community, Sir Basil Onwunze, pleaded with the residents to build on the peace moves initiated by the leadership of the town to consolidate on its gains so far.
'This great platform presents a good opportunity for us to express and evaluate ourselves individually and collectively as a people in terms of our journey towards a peaceful coexistence.
'Thus far, I will say we just managed to score a pass mark. We must strive to achieve excellence which is our ultimate goal so that our town, Ufuma, could take its rightful ranking in the comity of towns in Anambra State. The problem is our attitude.
'We could attain greatness by being open to discussions, dialogue and above all being amenable to corrections. We should ask questions and or seek clarifications from all levels of authority and leadership that impact on our lives in order to use our mature minds to form sound opinion on issues. In this way, we become better Ufuma citizens,' he said.
The chairman of the Egwu Otute Planning Committee, Nze Nnaemeka Okoro, who was visibly elated at the turnout of the event pleaded with the people not to extinguish the flame of peace placed on their palms.
In an interview with Fides, a veteran broadcaster and presenter with Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, and an indigene of Ufuma, Chief Mrs Ify Obinabo, thanked God for yet another successful celebration. This is even as she prayed Him for more heart-warming celebrations in the future.

The highlight of the event was the bestowment of various chieftaincy titles on some illustrious sons and friends of the community, including Rev. Fr. Dr. Edwin S. C. Obiora; Commodore Emmanuel Okechukwu Enemuo; Chief Dr Obi Young Nwankwo, and Chief Israel Ezue.

Among them are lawyers, lecturers, coaches, administrators, musicians, engineers, architects, name them. They are however bonded by two significant binding factors-Catholic Priesthood and Sports.
